What is PCOS?
PCOS is a complex hormonal and metabolic imbalance characterized by some or all of the following symptoms:
Multiple ovarian cysts, typically in a "string of pearls"
Hirsutism (excess hair on the face and other parts of the body)
Hair loss that resembles male pattern baldness
Acne
Excess weight that is very difficult to lose, typically accumulating in the middle of the body (but note that approximately 70% of women with PCOS are of normal weight)
Infertility
Insulin resistance
Women with PCOS also frequently suffer from mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. Other hormonal and metabolic imbalances may present as well, such as high blood pressure, thyroid disorders, early onset of Type II diabetes, and heart disease.
How is PCOS treated?
PCOS is typically treated by an endocrinologist, who will likely prescribe birth control pills and metformin (a diabetes drug) in order to help balance your hormones. There are also other medications that can help with hirsutism and the other conditions.
